“I want to take you to Egypt.”
“What? Why?”
“Maybe it will help bring your memories back. Vanessa said that you need to have more experiences. I thought that going back to where it all began might be beneficial.”
What the heck? He wanted her to remember Esag?
Up until that moment, Wonder hadn’t internalized how terrified she was of regaining her memories. Without making a conscious decision to do so, she wanted to forget the past and concentrate on a future with Anandur.
She didn’t want to remember loving someone else who might have abandoned her to die, or who’d left her. And if Esag had died and his death had been the cause of her trauma, she certainly didn’t want to remember that and go through the grief of losing a man she loved twice.
It was a cowardly approach, but she had started building a new life with the clan, and it was a good one. She didn’t want to lose it.
She didn’t want to lose Anandur.
Wonder shook her head. “I don’t understand. Why would you want me to get my memories back? What if I remember loving Esag? Don’t you want to give us a chance?”
“Oh, lass, that’s exactly why I want you to remember. I want to find him and prove to you that I’m the better man. Otherwise, his shadow will always hover between us.”
He leaned forward. “I don’t want you to live with what ifs and what could’ve beens. Hell, I don’t want to live with that. I want you to choose me, knowing that I’m the one for you and never second-guess it.”
Wonder swallowed. “Maybe I’m a coward, but I’m afraid of what the past holds. Perhaps losing my memory was a good thing. It allowed me to start a new life.”
“You’ll not be doing it alone. I will be with you every step of the way. And just so we’re clear, I’m not giving up on you no matter what. Your past isn’t going to scare me away. I’m going to fight for you.”
